Teng Tian is a Chinese artist who lives and works in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Born in Shanghai in 1996, Teng graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the University of the Arts Utrecht in 2021 and will be pursuing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London, UK in 2024. In Teng’s photorealistic paintings, the artist reflects on the literal and metaphorical barriers that exist in society, appreciating the minute details of the world that surrounds her.
Initially utilizing precise brushwork in her practice, Teng shifted to bolder strokes and more striking styles, experimenting with thicker paints and sharper contrasts to create works that elude forms of light and composition. Her works have drawn from photographic references to subtle forms of the imagination.
Her works have been included in exhibitions including ‘Jump In’ at Capital C (Amsterdam, 2024), ‘Inner Façade’ at Stichting Heden (Den Haag, 2023), the ‘Young Collectors Circle Edition Opening’ (Amsterdam, 2023), ‘Spouts III’ at Arti et Amicitae (Amsterdam, 2022), ‘Concrete-Garden’ at Upper East (Amstelveen, 2022), ‘Lef!’ at Mondriaanhuis (Amersfoort, 2022), ‘Best of Graduates 2021’ at Galerie Ron Mandos (Amsterdam, 2021) and the ‘HKU Fine Art Graduation Show’ at De Pastoe Fabreik (Utrecht, 2021)
She has been nominated for the SBK Young Talent Award from SBK Uitleen & Galerie (2022), the Lakeside Collection Award (2021) and the Young Blood Award (2021). She has participated in art fairs and festivals including the upcoming UNFAIR Art Fair in Amsterdam (2024), the Springboard Art Fair Utrecht (2023) and the Young Collectors Circle Festival (2022).
